Computing
Our Computing scheme is knowledge-based but we have placed skills at the heart of each subject. We have gone further than the requirements of the National Curriculum to build a scheme of work that is ambitious but give our children a world perspective, for example, 3D modelling and printing, and digital art. The needs of our children mean that we have made reading, language and vocabulary development to be key features of computing. The subjects has been designed and planned to give children the knowledge and skills that they need for later life such as: questioning, problem solving, freethinking, resilience, confidence and presenting skills and curiosity. In computing we have planned end points for pupils to attain by the end of the year written as knowledge and key skills. The knowledge and skills have been carefully sequenced to enable our children to know more and remember more. There is a degree of repetition to help pupils to retain knowledge and skills.
Computing Strands - The Computing scheme of work can be broken down into seven strands. Each strand focuses on a different area of Computing. We have identified knowledge and skills for each year group from Nursery through to Year 6 for each of these strands. Each year the knowledge and skills are built upon the knowledge and skills from the previous year. This has allowed us to create a scheme of work that is progressional across a wide range of Computing activities.
Research - Children will learn core knowledge and skills linked to research. This goes from learning the basics of navigating websites in Reception and Year 1 through to Year 6 where they are encouraged to question the validity of information that they find online.
Communication - Children, from a very young age are now using technology to communicate with friends and family. This strand focuses on teaching the children how to communicate using lots of different devices/platforms and builds into children working collaboratively online.
Networking and the Internet - In the strand the children learn to recognise and understand how different devices communicate with each other. They begin to understand how networks are formed and how the Internet works.
Computer Science (Coding) - Children learn the fundamental ability to think logicially and use pseudo code. This starts as single step instructions on remote control toys through to developing whole computer games independently.
Word Work - Children will learn 'traditional' word processing skills that allow them to create various writing templates such as leaflets, newspapers and blogs. Through manipulation and formatting of various text elements across several programs, the children gain the confidence and ability to apply the skills to any new technology.
Working with Images - Children delve into the world of digital art. From using basic painting programs to creating beautiful images with blended paints, creating stop motion animations and working with 3D models to print on the school 3D printer.
