Summer 1

Our Learning in Summer 1

Summer is when Year 6 prepare for their SATs, although this is merely an extension of the great work they have done in mathematics and English throughout the year. Each child is assigned a series of revision sessions, tailored towards their needs in arithmetic, reasoning, reading, writing, grammar and spelling. This includes reviewing previous years' content in order to identify and address gaps in learning due to the impact of the pandemic.

The other subjects covered during revision will require no written work. These have all been highly-anticipated, starting with PE - archery! Music uses the backing tracks produced last half-term to create a layered track with multiple elements. P4C is geared towards transition: to high school and other situations. Art moves on to Cubism, focusing on the work of Pablo Picasso. Computing links with history across this term; the children will use advanced formatting techniques to create WW2 propaganda posters and Top Trumps cards.

Following the SATs, the remaining subjects will be taught. While our history topic is still World War 2, it looks in greater depth at key people and events both at home and abroad. Geography takes us further abroad, exploring Japan's features and culture. Science will be seen and heard, as it covers both light and sound in more detail. Following on from last half term, Spanish will cover common wild animals and how to use prepositions. DT looks at automated electronic systems, demonstrated by creating a working set of traffic lights.

PSHE is the designated half-term for RSE, which will allow children to understand the dynamics of relationships and the importance of keeping safe online. For Year 6, this is also the designated half-term for a variety of trips and experiences to reward the pupils for all of their efforts. They will be entertained by trips to local venues - if you have any in mind, please let us know!
