Our Art and Design curriculum is formed from the statutory Framework for the EYFS and the National Curriculum. The schemes of work are knowledge-based but we have placed skills at the heart of each subject. The curriculum is enhanced by community projects and links and by trips and visits.

We value the importance of each subject equally. We have gone further than the requirements of the National Curriculum to build schemes of work that are ambitious and give our children a world perspective. The needs of our children mean that we have ensured reading, language and vocabulary development are key features of each subject. The subjects have been designed and planned to give children the knowledge and skills that they need for later life, such as: questioning, problem solving, freethinking, resilience, confidence, curiosity and presentation skills. These skills will enable our children to become lifelong independent learners. In each subject, we have planned end points for pupils to attain by the end of the year. The knowledge and skills have been carefully sequenced to enable our children to know more and to remember more therefore there is a degree of repetition to help pupils to retain knowledge and skills.
 

City of Art - St Margaret's Primary - 2022

Some of our Year 5 pupils were invited to take part in a project with the Whitworth Art Gallery, to make a video for the Manchester Arts Festival. They had the opportunity to discuss why art matters and had fun creating light pictures, interviewing an artist and exploring the art gallery. The final video was shown across various venues during the Manchester Arts Festival.

What do the pupils at St Margaret's think about Art and Design?

"I thought art was just drawing and painting, but we have done lots of work on 3D art this year, which has been tough to imagine but I enjoyed it."   Year 6 pupil

 

"I like art so much. It makes me feel calm. I'm good at it." Year 2 pupil

 

"Art is important because if we didn't do it we wouldn't have nice pictures to look at and also doing art makes me feel happy."  Year 1 pupil

 

"I like sketching because I've enjoyed learning about shading when you are drawing" Year 4 pupil

 

"Combining the technical things about art with the ability to be creative has made me appreciate art and design more as a subject."  Year 6 pupil

 

"In art we learn about different artists.  My favourite is Andy Goldsworthy because instead of painting and drawing he makes land art and it's a bit different.  I loved making my flower picture from everything we collected."  Year 1 pupil

 

"It’s like the ladybird from the book."     "I painted it red and black because that’s what colour a ladybird is."  Reception pupils talking about the art they had made.
