P4C
Philosophy for Children (P4C) is a wonderful way of bringing teachers and children together to discuss things that matter. The underlying principle is for children and young people to experience rational and reasonable dialogue about things that matter to them and their teachers. All participants work together in a ‘community of enquiry’. The aim for each child is not to win an argument but to become clearer, more accurate, less self-contradictory and more aware of other arguments and values before reaching a conclusion.

Chosen Question ‘Why should we take care of the environment?’
•Facilitator moves
•Child: The planet might get dirty.
•F: So why is that a problem? (pushing for greater depth)
•Child: We can’t live a proper life if the planet is dirty.
•F: What do you mean be a ‘proper life? (demanding clarity)
•F: If we all agree that we should take care of the environment, why don’t people, then? (looking for alternatives)
•F: (after repetition): Ok, so we have said that … (keeping dialogue engaging and purposeful)
